The video below is a good example of a high-profile executive protection fail! You can see this team has the armored cars, the firearms, the plate carriers, pretty uniforms and it looks like they have done some HEPCO / PSD training but… In reality such things and behavior mean nothing, it is just Hollywood theatrics… If you don’t understand the game, if you don’t understand your opposition then, like these guys and girls, you are just lambs waiting to be slaughtered… But… I am sure you already know this… Right?
For me large executive protection formations and motorcades are just big targets for IEDs, drones, belt fed machine guns or Glocks with switches and happy sticks etc. Motorcades and masses of overt bodyguards are just for show rather than providing protection… A status symbol for a client who wants to show off their power and influence to their minions.
When dealing with threats and working in environments where military grade weapons are available, which these days can be classed as most places, protection techniques need to be adapted. Sadly, all most supposed protectors know is how to act like a bodyguard, just like in the movies, to be a cosplay bodyguard, rather than understanding the intricacies of providing protection.
Being a cosplay bodyguard is all well and good. Dressing up in tactical gear or cheap suits and playing with guns can make for some very cool selfies… It can even put some pennies in your pockets… But your problems will begin when your client pisses off the wrong people…
